DOLCE & GABBANA: THE MAKE-UP

I have never owned a lipstick quite like my mothers. It was vivid red, with the powdery smell that will forever remind me of her. Its curvy gold case would sparkle like treasure from deep at the bottom of her handbag. This lipstick harked back to the golden age - when men were chivalrous and women only wore heels. Now Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have swooped into London, wearing capes the same colour as my lips. The Italian Superheroes have finally created their first Beauty collection: Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up.

The collection, exclusive to Selfridges, is inspired by the golden age of Hollywood. Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up is for the girl who likes to surround herself with luxury and glamour which is evident from the gold packaging which screams opulence. If you regularly apply your make up in public, these products are made for you. If you don’t apply your make up in public, this collection will make you want to. You will want to place each item atop your make up table just to admire.

Pat McGrath, AKA the most influential make up artist alive today, was set the challenge of transforming the design ideas into products. Having created their make-up looks for the catwalk for over 10 years, she is the only woman for the job. Colours were inspired by fabric swatches from Dolce&Gabbana collections. Texture also played an important role; McGrath recreated the texture of fabrics such as velvet and pearl within the products.

Discussing the overall effect of the products, McGrath explained, “The look is provocative; your attention is drawn to the lips and hands, in order to absorb the exalted gestural expressiveness and sensuality”. The emphasis of this collection is on the lips, but products for eyes, skin and nails are just as special. The products in the collection range from subtle for everyday looks to the more daring appearance for night. The goddess that is Pat McGrath will be present in the Selfridges store on Saturday 25th April to offer make up tips and demonstrate the key looks for the Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up collection.

The campaign which stars Scarlett Johansson was inspired by Marilyn Monroe, the embodiment of feminine glamour. As Dolce&Gabbana explain, “We wanted to create the modern Marilyn in each visual”. Johansson was deemed perfect for the campaign due to her beauty, vintage style and confidence. The lipstick, which is at the heart of the collection, comes in two different styles, Classic Cream and Shine. Classic Cream is the star of this show and is featured in no less than 27 different shades. In keeping with the 1950s, the lipstick has the both the rose, powdery scent of vintage lipstick and the magical click sound of the lid being pushed down. But most importantly, it reminds me of my mother.
