ANGELS OF ANARCHY

Manchester Art Gallery's current exhibition, Angels of Anarchy, is set to be the British exhibition of the year. With over 150 artworks by 33 female artists working in the realm of Surrealism, this is the first major exhibition of its kind to be held in Europe. The exhibition features work on all mediums, including paintings, photography, sculpture, prints and surreal objects. The photography on show is particularly interesting, included is work by Lee Miller and Dora Maar. Self portraiture from opposite ends of the emotional spectrum is also on show; Francesca Woodman offers work of a spooky nature while Claude Cahun is more theatrical.

Angels of Anarchy celebrates the role that women played in Surrealism, something that was not fully recognised at the time most of these pieces were created. Radical artists, such as Frida Kahlo, Lee Miller, Meret Oppenheim and Leonora Carrington play a large role, due to their influential, if shocking art. British artists contributing to this movement are also featured, such as Emila Medková, Jane Graverol, Mimi Parent, Kay Sage and Francesca Woodman. Artists from all over the world are exhibited alongside each other, from countries such as Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Mexico, Switzerland and the USA.

The exhibition itself is divided into five themes. The Portrait/Self portrait section explains how the surrealism artists played with identity. In comparison to the work of male artists at the time who presented women as passive objects, these artists actively experimented with their appearance. The Landscape section features paintings and photography depicting nature, the surreal aspect is hidden in small details causing the landscape to develop human characteristics, often resembling women. Interior refers to the importance of the home, many of the artists depict the interior as a dark, claustrophobic space, while others show a fantasy world within the home. The Still Life section features art work that uses objects, often making the form of a woman. These are often made out of found materials or even parts of themselves, such as Mimi Parent who included her hair in the object Maitresse. The final section of the exhibition is Fantasy which explores the mystical world of myths, fairy tales, dreams and folklore. Artists such as Jane Graverol and Leonor Fini have explored the idea of fantasy in their work, looking into alternative identities for women.

Many of the artworks in this exhibition are on loan from private collectors meaning Angels of Anarchy is a once in a lifetime experience to see all of these artists displayed together. Many of the pieces, including a Cast of Lee Miller’s Torso (c. 1942) have very rarely been on public display. So head to the Manchester Art Gallery and enjoy one of the finest celebrations of female art in the 20th Century.
