TREND - NAVAJO

From the street to the home Navajo prints are über popular all of a sudden. Traditionally worn by Navajo Indians, the designs have been reinterpreted by brands such as Ralph Lauren and Opening Ceremony. The print has also crept onto the high street at Zara and online store asos.

The prints are varied in style, some in muted black and white tones, others brighter and more colourful. In Navajo culture, the most intricate designs were reserved for the tribal chief's blanket which was composed of many different patterns and colours. Red is featured heavily as this was considered one of the most desirable colours by the Navajo Indians due to its rarity. Red yarn was hard to come by until the 18th century when the yarn began to be imported.

Today most of the designs have been interpreted in a bright and colourful way, making us all appear as noble as Navajo chiefs. Opening Ceremony have hooked up with Pendleton to create short sleeved coats complete with a rainbow spectrum of colour, the designer's unique take on the hoody is equally bright. Not everything is super colourful, the adorable wool mini skirts come in fawn as well as vibrant turquoise. If you find the strong shapes and colours a bit too intense to wear, the Navajo print pillow by Ralph Lauren Home is the perfect subtle touch to any home.
